In our last blog post, Dr. Sachs examined some foods and drinks that cause your teeth to discolor. Below, Dr. Sachs will look at some dietary choices that are not only bad for your teeth, but also for your overall health.
While junk foods (sweets) are a nice treat every once in a while, they can cause issues for your oral and overall health.
Eating foods like candy, cookies, and other desserts, as well as drinking soda, can cause an uptick in cavities. In addition to cavities, these things can also cause gum disease to develop. The reason for this is due to the excess amounts of sugars that are contained in these foods and beverages.
Unfortunately, if you begin suffering from gum disease, it can lead to loss of jaw bone, diabetes, heart disease, and many other health issues.
In addition to the above, eating sweets and drinking soda will cause you to consume a ton of calories that offer very few nutritional benefits. As well as being high in sugar, these foods are also high in fructose corn syrup. Unfortunately, high fructose corn syrup is extremely detrimental to your oral and overall health.
Do you drink “diet” soda because it is healthier than regular soda? While this is true, don’t be fooled into thinking it is healthy. To your oral health alone, diet soda contains many acids that eat away at your teeth’s enamel and cause oral health issues.
